Medical Marijuana in Rhode Island
On January 3, 2006, Rhode Island passed The Edward O. Hawkins and Thomas C. Slater Medical Marijuana Act and it took effect immediately upon passage. The Act removed all state-level criminal penalties for the possession, use and cultivation of marijuana by qualified medical marijuana Patients who possess “written certification” from their physicians stating “In the practitioner’s professional opinion, the potential benefits of the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the health risks for the qualifying patient.”
